40th ANNIVERSARY OF PHIL COLLINS’ LANDMARK ALBUM, “NO JACKET REQUIRED”

40th ANNIVERSARY OF PHIL COLLINS’ LANDMARK ALBUM, “NO JACKET REQUIRED”

Released in February 1985, the album marked the pinnacle of Collins’ solo career and became one of the defining sounds of the mid-1980s pop-rock era.

No Jacket Required was a global phenomenon. It topped the charts in numerous countries, including the US, UK, and Canada, and even achieved Diamond certification in the United States for selling over 10 million copies. The album’s release propelled Collins to a level of superstardom that few artists achieve, even leading to his iconic transatlantic performance at Live Aid later that year, where he played both his solo set and with Genesis.

The album is best known for its synthesizers, electronic drum sound and an immaculate, polished production style (Engineer Hugh Padgham) that epitomized the era. It successfully blended pop sensibilities with elements of Rhytm & Blues and a driving rock energy.

Key tracks that remain radio staples today include:
“Sussudio”: A funky, upbeat track with an infectious hook and a prominent horn section.
“One More Night”: A smooth, soulful ballad that showcased Collins’ prowess as a vocalist.

“Don’t Lose My Number”: A more narrative-driven song with a driving beat and a unique music video.
“Take Me Home”: An atmospheric closer about some man man locked up with mental problems missing home, featuring background vocals from his friend and frequent collaborator, Eric Clapton.

While the No Jacket Required sound was often criticized at the time for being “overproduced” or too commercial by some rock purists (that later generated “But Seriously”), its impact on the musical landscape of the decade is undeniable.
The album perfectly captured the spirit and sound of 1985. The “No jacket required” title was a playful nod to a restaurant that refused him entry due to his attire.
Released on February 18, 1985, Phil Collins’ third solo album, No Jacket Required, sold over 25 million copies worldwide and became his best-selling album, reaching number one in 11 countries, including the US and UK.
The album spawned four top-10 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, two of which, “Sussudio” and “One More Night,” hit number one. Other hits included “Don’t Lose My Number” and “Take Me Home,” featuring guest backing vocals from the likes of Peter Gabriel and Sting.

At the 28th Annual Grammy Awards in 1986, No Jacket Required won three awards, including the prestigious Album of the Year. It also earned two Brit Awards, including British Album of the Year.
Beyond the studio, the album fueled the “No Jacket Required World Tour,” which culminated in Collins’ legendary feat of performing at both the London and Philadelphia Live Aid concerts on the same day in July 1985.
40th Anniversary Celebrations
To mark the 40-year milestone, a deluxe reissue titled No Jacket Required (Fully Tailored) was released in September 2025.

I remembered watching every chapter of “Miami Vice” so as just to see him in one of the chapters over there, and also the “Against all Odds” 1984 movie and “Buster” movie (1998).

From a number one fan, my tribute to you, dear Philip David Charles!”
